Welcome to Bilingual House!

Bilingual House (formerly known as “May’s Chinese-English School”) is a high-quality child development program. We leverage children’s golden age of language acquisition to offer a unique, hands-on curriculum through Mandarin Chinese immersion (no prior knowledge of Mandarin is required as all our staff members are fluent in both English and Mandarin).

Our research-based experiential approach to learning focuses on enhancing physical, social, and emotional development through daily activities and projects.

Our weekly lesson plans were designed by Hongmei “May” DeLosh, who holds a Master of Science in Early Childhood Education from Eastern Michigan University. Currently, the operations are managed by Han Zhao, who holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Brigham Young University.

Through our loving and experienced team of childcare professionals, we have been serving diverse families in the greater Ann Arbor area since 2007.

What Makes Us Unique?

  • We teach pre-math, science, language arts, and social studies in both Mandarin and English for natural language acquisition and enhanced learning retention.
  • We offer a balanced and developmentally age-appropriate curriculum that has been reviewed by college professors and experts from the Council for Professional Recognition (http://www.cdacouncil.org/), which incorporates speaking, reading, mathematical, and critical thinking skills.
  • We emphasize character-building activities in our lessons to enhance our student’s self-esteem and promote prosocial behavior and habits.
  • As a State-licensed Group Child Care Home, our environment is the perfect blend of home and school; the familial atmosphere is equipped with educational toys and learning posters giving our students an optimal setting for learning and social growth.
  • Our small group size and low teacher-child ratios of 1:2 to 1:6 equates to added individual attention to each student’s safety, learning, and happiness.
  • Our location is perfect for outdoor exploration. In addition to our spacious backyard playground, we often take our students on fieldtrips to Mallets Creek Public Library, Cobble Stone Farm, Buhr Park, Rose Park, and County Farm Park—all of which are within 5 minutes’ walking distance.

Why Choose a Mandarin Chinese Immersion Preschool?

Unlike English, Spanish, and most other languages in the world, Chinese is a tonal language. The following web articles highlight some of the many benefits of learning a tonal language:

Furthermore, there are numerous additional benefits from learning Mandarin Chinese in particular—some of which are identified by Boston University’s Department of World Languages & Literatures as listed below:

  • Many US companies do business in China and have long-term investments there.
  • China is the most populous nation in the world, with 1.28 billion people.
  • One fifth of the planet speaks Chinese. Mandarin Chinese is the mother tongue of over 873 million people, making it the most widely spoken first language in the world.
  • In addition to the People’s Republic of China and Taiwan, Mandarin Chinese is also spoken in the important and influential Chinese communities of Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei, the Philippines, and Mongolia.
